This is a commisioned piece I created for the concert series Strings in the Mountains. Six artists in the area were selected to build chairs with the theme Musical Chairs. The chair is built of Baltic birch plywood, each ply individually cut out and laminated. There are no fasteners of any kind. The biggest challenge in making the chair was keeping all the laminations together during glue-up, and afterwards sculpting the pieces so they all blend in to the middle, resulting in a look that intrigues the eye and yet looks inviting. The individual laminations create an undulating surface that has an extremely dynamic feel.
Even though the seat is cantilevered, the piece has a very solid feel; as well it should, considering it contains three sheets of plywood. |
